Whole Mushrooms or Extract?
•
Extracts, while useful in flavorings and certain applications, can be problematic due to variations in quality and efficacy, especially when dealing with low-quality or improperly sourced extracts. Extracts may contain little to none of the active ingredients, depending on the efficacy of the extraction process. In addition, some extracts may contain harmful residual solvents if not properly remediated.
Potential Issues with Extracts:
- Quality Variability: Extracts can vary significantly in quality depending on the source, extraction method, and the specific compounds extracted. If ineffective solvents are used, there may be none of the active compounds carried into the final product.
- Residual Solvents: In cannabis extracts, for example, the extraction process may leave behind residual solvents, which can be harmful if not properly regulated, says the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction.
- Loss of Context: Even if an extract does contain the sought after active ingredients, it can never be a complete representation of all of the compounds which exist together in the natural product.
Whole mushroom tissue ground into our tablets ensures the compounds known to be beneficial are being delivered along with all of their naturally-occurring counterparts. While we may not fully understand the benefits of all of these compounds, âme du monde’s philosophy is that the fungi is our greatest teacher. For us to choose one or two compounds to target in an extract, is to discount the value of the complexity the mushrooms have to offer.
